I ventured out early this morning and walked around Valle Crucis park. I was looking for some friends who were taking part in an Audubon Society bird count. VC park is situated right along the banks of the Watauga River and has a pond with plenty of brush with several open fields nearby which make it a year round haven for hundreds of species. While waiting for my friends I spied the usual suspects: starlings, song sparrows, nuthatches and goldfinches. I also noticed at least 14 bluebirds hanging out near the pond hunting for breakfast. My mother always told me that bluebirds were a sure sign of happiness. It must be true because I was delighted to be there in the park alone, with just my bird buddies.
