I was on top of Howard's Knob today and revisited this backside view. There were vestiges of snow and I tried to capture the 'before spring' essence, but the photos did not survive my digital light table. I like this shot of the old discarded fence posts simply just laying upon the ground. I had to shoot through barbed wired to capture this image. Happily, I remain unscathed.
Unscathed is how I would like my good friend Rob to return from Iraq a year from now. Our office received today our first long letter from Rob. He is one of our graphic artists serving in the National Guard's 1450th Transportation Unit which arrived in Kuwait last week. Next week, he and the others in his platoon will be making 2 week long trips into Iraq. In his letter he says:
"I haven't seen any critters yet but I was told there's creatures like camel spiders (nasty & big), lizards, scorpions & vipers (deadly). We may never see them but we are assured that we will see our enemies at times. This kind of sucks."
Additionally, he says that the temps there are currently about 95 degrees F and by the end of the month are expected to reach about 130 degrees F. He states that hot ticket items in the supply stores are Gatorade and insect spray w/DEET. He did not go into any details but also reports that he is worried that poor decisions are being and that he is not the only one feeling this way and says they are "basically scared of the results and have no faith." Like I said, he did not elaborate.
The mood in the office today was rather glum after reading his letter. We made copies and passed it around. Some folks were irrate, others just praying that he and the rest of the men and woman would return safely. It is my first real war...and for Rob's sake, I hope some fences get mended soon.
