I was on my way to an assignment and as I crossed the parking lot to my Jeep, I noticed this huge moth clinging to a weed at the very edge of the asphalt. I ran to get the proper lens hoping that it would not take flight until I was able to capture it's image. I shot several close ups (love the antenna!) . This moth is huge, nearly the size of my hand. The body is mostly a furry orange (reminds me of those 1970's shag carpets) and the abdomen area sports a striking black and white striped fur. The wings as you can see are really just a mottled dirty water color except for the burnt orange markings. It finally got ticked up at me for shoving my lens into his face and finally, and very awkwardly, flew away...of into the trees. I don't have a clue as to what kind of moth it is so if anyone out there is more knowledgeable, have at it.
I think that I am now inspired to learn a little more about moths because they are quite a mystery to me.
