I got the call this evening from my husband. My brother and he made it from Raleigh, NC to Melbourne, Fl in 10 hours and 2 minutes. All through SC and GA the radio alerted them to imminent tornados. Apparently, they were about 20 minutes ahead of all of the worst weather and glided into Florida with no problem. The story gets even better. Upon arriving at my brother's house, they did in fact see a tree on the roof...but it was a scrawny pine that pierced the shelter. As you can see, there are lots of shingles missing, but the structure is well intact. My husband was happy to report to me that the house now has electricity and that after 3 hours of sleep, 10 hours of driving and a couple hours of messing with a chainsaw, he is now sitting comfortably in air conditioning sipping scotch. He will sleep well tonight and so will I.
The rains in Boone continue to fall. Roughly 2 1/2 inches so far today. My youngest described the Watauga River as "angry chocolate milk." We have another day of Frances to go and although the waters rise, I've seen and survived much worse. I will get up early in the morning to see the havoc that nature wrought and try to show you something. Until then, may you all have the sweetest of dreams!
