The tiny community of Foscoe received the worst of Ivan this morning. The photo above is of Valley Creek that literally sliced Hwy 105 in half. About a mile further up the highway, a mudslide closed the road from Avery County. Swift water rescue teams have had to evacuated about 20 people from areas in Foscoe. Sadly I have no action shots of the rescues. Hwy 19E in Avery County is also impassable as is several smaller roads in both counties. The wind has been quite gusty.
I woke up at 4am to pitch black. No power. I fumbled to find my cell phone and used its wonderfully blue light to find my scanner and get to work. Thunder , lightening and gusts of wind were my sound and light show as I listened to the frantic efforts of the rescue workers. I did not leave my home until there was the beginning of light at around 6:30am. I didn't bother to check to see if school would meet today...By the look of the water running off my road, I knew that the girls could sleep late this morning.
I am finally drinking my first cup of coffee
