This is the only photo that I have of my grandfather and me. I'm the little slug being held by the old man in the photo. My Grandpa Bertrand died later that year. My father was going through some old family negatives to scan in and happened upon it. I like this photo not only because of the folks in it (from left: my father, gramps & me, my brother, my sister and my grandmother) but because if you look closely at my grandfather, you will see that he is wearing a particularly fetching necklace called a Leica rangefinder camera. According to those who knew Grandpa B, he was a scientist's scientist...his hobbies included working with wood, digging up rocks and photography. He used to grind his own lenses and made up his own developing formulas--fairly high tech tasks. A couple of years ago my aunt sent me the Leica and I cherish it. Seeing a photo of my gramps and me with our one common interest around his neck is priceless.
My older brother and his blushing bride fled their Melbourne, Florida home yesterday. They are safe but have been on my mind quite a bit today. We are headed into Tennessee this evening to look after other relatives so no weekend posts will be forthcoming. I am going to a computerless home. Eeeeeeks!
