To get a better shot than this, be sure to take a camera with you everywhere you go. To get a shot like this, requires several self-inflicted swift kicks in the butt for not having a camera earlier, a patient husband, and the foolishness to wade in the Watauga River carrying thousands of dollars worth of photo equipment. Thank god I didn't fall...
Here's the story:
As my husband and I were walking around Valle Crucis Park, we saw my friend Rob. He talked to us about his fear of, well, I probably shouldn't say, but as we clung to his story, a fawn popped out of a thicket and bounced towards the river.
Just like a woman I let out a shrill, "Awwww!"
Followed immediately by me saying: "Shit, I don't have my camera."
Both my husband and Rob questioned me about the lack of my expensive necklace.
The
moment was gone and I was sure Bambi was out of sight. As my husband
and I drew closer to the river we saw it cross the water. It stood for several moments ankle deep in a golden pool of water. This was the perfect image that I missed.
My husband and I continued on our walk.
I
thought I could let go my feelings of missing 'the shot' but we walked
another .95 of a mile and Bambi was still on the river's edge. I
whined about my lack of preparedness and my sweet husband sighed and
said,
"Let's go get your camera."
I saw Rob in the river and asked him to watch the fawn and not let it go anywhere while I get my camera.
That was clearly a stupid request because really, what did I didn't expect him to do? Football tackle Bambi and make him stay.
But Rob was polite just to nod his head as if...
Meanwhile
my husband called eldest daughter and arranged for her to meet us at
the foot of our mountain with all of my equipment.
We returned to
the park. I ran across the field and found Bambi resting underneath a
canopy of trees waiting for her mother to come pick her up from her
afternoon adventure and for me to take her photo.
I threw off my shoes and waded into the river.
Et voila, here is one of the results.
As I retreated from the river, my husband held out his hands to catch me.
"Ummm, watch out for that water mocassin over there," he said while pointing nearby to nothing at all.
I reckon watching me leap out of the water is his idea of amusement.
So, in the movie is Bambi a girl or boy?
