...particularly when it involves hanging out with the guys while they make a batch of molasses. Sure, the process of making the cane based syrup is as slow as, well, making molasses. A fact I learned while I photographically touched based with the group as they hunkered under a shelter whilst on top of hot mud/stone stone stirring green gunk upon a copper lined skiff. Obviously this was not the first time these gentlemen had made molasses. In fact, at least one has done it for as long as he can remember and was taught by his father who was taught by his father. The man's son helped him this year by tending the fire when most of the curious had left. Later he helped strain the juice with cane stalks through ham sacks when it was done cooking. The one thing I learned from watching the process was that man will indeed work very hard all day long and/or risk getting stung numerous time in order to score a touch of golden sweet upon the tongue.
