This is a eyewitness blog color report typed live from Watauga/Avery, North Carolina. I ventured to the summit of Grandfather Mountain this morning where I was nearly blown away, not necessarily from the vivid colors, but by the wind. Sheesh. It was cold and windy up top. I stopped in the middle of the road on the way back down to take this photo of a rather attractive golden tree.
Next, I stopped at the most gorgeous Maple tree at the edge of McRae Meadows. I had to wait my turn to take this almost cliche photo. There were two other photographers ahead of me and one behind me in line....This view of Grandfather should be labled by a Kodak sign. Same with the famous Linn Cove viaduct shot which I noticed had a line of photographers waiting to climb the boulders for 'the shot'.
I travelled north on the Blue Ridge Parkway and this time was blown away by the intensity of some leaves on some of the ridgelines. By far, Green Mountain sports the biggest autumn leaves 'wow' factor.
Overall, even though this isn't the best autumn color we've seen in the High Country, the views are still fantastic. So long as the wind doesn't pick up too much, the next week and a half won't disappoint the leaf lookers or the local chambers of commerce.
**Update and Photography Hint**
circular polarizing filter + autumn leaves = pretty blue skies w/ beautiful saturated colors.
No Photoshop required.
