One of my favorite gifts was from a friend who gave me several bulbs of Watauga County garlic. Anyone who has ever eaten my cookin' knows that I'm a liberal user of allium-be it raw, sliced, smashed or squeezed. Many believe garlic has health benefits, but this matters little to me as I just like its taste. So if you want to kiss me, be forewarned, there is a garlicfest happening in my mouth.
And speaking of homegrown goodies: A co-worker/friend of mine has developed MetaBoone in his spare time. Metaboone is "a source for blogs, news, and media in Boone and Watauga county, North Carolina. and is based upon rssdit by Ivo Danihelka, which in turn, is a fork of the open source Reddit code." I laugh because I don't even understand that last sentence I typed. All I know is I like following Metaboone on Twitter because it aggregates all the High Country news and bloggy goodness into one spot. Of course, I also read the Boone Web daily as it stretches a out bit further than our county line and searches the internet for stories relevant to our area such as this story on the state of our state's health care plan. Yikes.
Check out the Junkfood Science blog sometime. I spent a long time looking over Sandy Szwarc's well researched archives which offer "Critical examinations of studies and news on food, weight, health and
healthcare that mainstream media misses. Debunks popular myths,
explains science and exposes fraud that affects your health. Plus some
fun food for thought. For readers not afraid to question and think
critically to get to the truth."
For example: Thinking about going on a New Year diet? Thinking about using diet pills? Read this entry and think again.
On the homefront:
Christmas came early as family gathered at my home last weekend. My house is now in reclamation mode from our holiday follies. Someone always gets sick at Christmas and this year, my youngest suffered a painful kidney stone attack. She is back on the mend and ready to play with friends.
