One of the best additions to the market in the past year is the growing availability of locally raised and slaughtered beef and pork. Jason Brooks offers his Angus beef and Charles Church sells pork.
I saw Charles in front of his stand as he was yammering to someone while a drizzling rain fell. He saw me and said,
"Come here youngin'. Squeeze my neck."
So I did.
Then he pointed to his pig sign.
"How d'ya like my pig? That's the only thing I learned in first grade," he explained.
He further detailed how his teacher taught him how to make an 'E' for a nose, an 'M' for ears, an 'S' for a tail and 'Ws' for feet. Connect the lines and ya have yourself a fine drawing of a piggie.
"Who knew I'd remember that after all these years?" he asked.
Charles also told me he was going to eat dinner at Maverick Farms on Saturday night. Apparently after meeting an opera singer at one dinner, he's become a regular.
And remember Alanna Kellogg from A Veggie Venture? Again this year, she has commissioned an icon called 'Fresh from the Farm' to encourage eating fresh and local. I have posted it on my sidebar with a link to the Watauga County Farmers' Market. Go to the market then visit Alanna's blog for ideas on how to cook all those fruits and vegetables.
